EdVenture is funded through a generous gift from the estate of Grace Woodward, a longtime friend of Penn State.

At this year’s event, we welcome Katherine Wisener, associate director of faculty development at The University of British Columbia, to explore the role of teaching incentives in the health professions.

The full schedule for EdVenture, Penn State College of Medicine’s annual celebration of teaching and learning, is listed below. All events during the day will be virtual, with an evening in-person poster reception and award ceremony at University Conference Center, 30 Conference Drive, Hershey, PA 17033.

9 a.m. – Do we support a positive learning climate for GME trainees?
Beth K. Herman, DEd

Learning objectives:

  • Identify cultural barriers to an effective learning climate.
  • Discuss the impact of institutional culture on the hidden curriculum.
  • Outline barriers to teaching trainee professionalism.

10 a.m. – See One, Do One, Teach One: Sacred Mantra or Anathema?
Ami DeWaters, MD, MSc and Ryan Munyon, MD

Learning objectives:

  • Identify three characteristics of clinical imprinting.
  • Evaluate the importance and role of personal experience in learning.
  • Discuss the phenomenon of clinical imprinting.
  • Evaluate how personal experience and clinical imprinting affects medical education curriculum development, particularly regarding HSS.

11 a.m. – Do We Have Adequate Clinical Skills Teaching at Penn State College of Medicine?
Sarah Nickolich, MD and Munima Nasir, MD, FAAFP

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the clinical skills taught and assessment techniques used during Phase 1
  • Describe the progression of clinical skills through and assessment techniques used in clerkships.
  • Discuss how our clinical skills curriculum across Phases 1 and 2 prepare students for clinical practice after graduation.

Noon Plenary – Dean Karen E. Kim, MD, MS

A Vision for Education at Penn State College of Medicine

  • Describe strengths and areas of opportunity within our educational programs.
  • Outline a vision for future educational successes at the College of Medicine.

1:10 p.m. – Oral Presentations: Resident Research Day

3 p.m. – Chalk Talk Competition for Residents and Fellows

Residents and fellows are invited to participate in a friendly Chalk Talk competition to be held virtually as part of Resident/Fellow Day and EdVenture. Chalk Talks can be on any topic and only 3 minutes long.

5 p.m. – Reception and Awards Ceremony

Please join us at University Conference Center, 30 Conference Drive, Hershey, PA 17033 on the evening of EdVenture.

At 5 p.m., enjoy hors d’oeuvres and check out this year’s lineup of posters from your peers. Award presentations will begin at 6 p.m., including:
